If you are a computer user, you have probably found yourself stuck doing
some repetitive task on a computer. Perhaps you've had to remove all of
the excess whitespace from a file, rename a whole folder of files, back up your
important files each week, or proceed through a dozen dialog boxes just to
perform a simple task. These tasks can get frustrating, not only because
they are time-consuming and boring, but also because a computer should be able
to eliminate them. Fortunately, in the majority of situations, these tasks and
many more can be scripted or programmed to be done automatically.
There are many common day-to-day tasks that can be fully or partially automated
in order to save a great deal of your time. Because everybody's situation is
different, we custom-create each script or utility program for individual needs.
This allows almost any conceivable task to be automated or streamlined.
Additionally, we try to select the best tool to get your task done in the best
and most flexible manner. Some tasks may be best accomplished in Excel using VBA macros,
others might be best suited for a Perl script, while others may require a small
C program.
Platforms
Some utility programs can be very similar on any computer platform. For example,
the source code for a text-processing utility would be almost identical if not
the same on many platforms. However, some utilities need to be highly customized
to the platform it runs on. Some Windows-specific utilities we have created include
programs to manipulate certain designated portions of the Windows registry, as well
as a program to automatically toggle a configuration setting by making changes in
the Windows Control Panel. The possibilities for utilities and scripts on
UNIX-like platforms are virtually unlimited. From managing an Apache web server
on a Linux machine to modifying a large number of user accounts and disk quotas,
most tasks on UNIX platforms can be automated because of the modular system structure.
